Director’s notes

Rigoletto. I misteri del teatro (Rigoletto. The mysteries of the theatre) will show you that through the medium of the theatre you can create magic, you can narrate wonderful and dangerous stories, you can create love, war and storm with one lightening; just like a firefly that suddenly enlightens a dark wood.

1920 Circa.

A theatre company always travelling from theatre to theatre, each actor full of suitcases, chests with costumes, instruments and trinkets. The idea of staging this wonderful story gets lost in memory, but everyone is aware that every night by narrating it, would have suffered, rejoiced, forgiven and in the end surrendered in front of the Madame of Death. For a long time… and who knows for how long.  The Compagnia del Duca (name of our group of comedians) arrives every day in a different theatre to stage a performance with the few elements it owns. Every time the actors discover new spaces, play with theatrical instruments and create magic with the small and big secrets hidden in the world of theatre. Actors and singers move on the stage, they interpret their characters, sing unforgettable songs and tell us that in the theatre everything is fake but nothing after all is false.

Rigoletto (old actor) is the Duke’s jester (first actor of the company) that has been damned by Monterone (the actor who interprets a series of characters) after having mocked his daughter. Rigoletto has a daughter too, her name is Gilda (young actress, old actor’s daughter) and her father has made her existence secret to the court, in order to avoid that she gets lost in the illusory games of the theatre. Gilda is the one who wants to discover the world in which she lives in, but is kept inside the house by his father. She falls in love with the Duke, who pretends to be a young student. The court, suspecting that Gilda could be Rigoletto’s lover, decides to kidnap her in revenge and for fun. Inside the palace of the Duke, father and daughter see each other’s, Rigoletto is desperate for what has happened and makes a deal with the hired assassin Sparafucile, he wants to kill the duke to fulfil his personal revenge. At the end, Gilda profoundly in love with the Duke decides to sacrifice her life for her love: the world crumbles upon Rigoletto

The work of the actor is to recreate on the stage this magic reality, every day, for months or years as in the case of Compagnia del Duca, not without great effort because often it becomes difficult to distinguish fiction from reality.

INTERACTION

Children and teenagers of Opera Domani take part actively as extras of the theatrical group which arranges the performance, and as real actors they will interpret a series of characters and play with the theatrical masks.

This year in class, with the opera Rigoletto we will confront with the themes of identity and diversity.

We’ll enter in the magic of the theatrical world, with its secrets, its story, its jobs and mysterious instruments.

New interdisciplinary projects linked to the social context of reference: bullying as matter of honour and dishonour, damnation and revenge, digital identity as a modern disclosure.

NEW 2019 game app by Imaginarium Creative Studio. It is a videogame full of colours and tricks created by a team of artists born during the eighties, passionate of console and cabinet arcade of that period.

RIGOLETTO e I misteri del teatro – videogame

An adventure in the Theatre, you will guide your character in complete freedom, discover interactive stories, quiz and games about Opera Domani’s Rigoletto, with handmade pictures inspired by the performance.

Completely hand-drawn and filled with the meta-theatrical vision of the director Manuel Renga, the game sees Rigoletto as its main character, involved in an incredible adventure to discover the secret spaces of the theatre and its charming instruments. Rigoletto will face a series tricks and enigmas, obviously accompanied by Verdi’s music. The player will be thrown in a strange dimension where lyric opera and visual artistic psychedelia (characteristic in vintage videogame) meet in order to overturn the linear course of the story and offer new forms of entertainment and learning. Available from February 2020.

Downloadable from Google play and App store.
